Malaba – Kampala standard-gauge railway line
The Malaba–Kampala SGR project is a critical component of the East African Community Railway Master Plan and the Northern Corridor Integrated Projects Railway Network. The “Eastern Route” will connect the Kampala, the capital of Uganda with Malaba at the Kenyan border. In Kenya, the line continues through Nairobi and eventually reaches the port of Mombasa. Together with the Northern and Western Corridors, it also connects to South Sudan, Rwanda, and the DR Congo. The 273 km Malaba-Kampala SGR project is part of the wider plan to develop 1,724 km of railway in phases. In addition to the Eastern Route, other lines include the Northern Line, which extends from Tororo to Gulu and Nimule on the South Sudan border (465 km) with a spur leading to Pakwach and Vurra on the DR Congo border (297 km). The Western Line connects Kampala to Bihanga, Kasese, and Mpondwe on the DR Congo border (383 km). The Southern Line stretches from Bihanga to Mirama Hills on the Rwanda border (280 km).
